SELASIE GOMADO

Selasie Gomado is the visionary founder and Creative Director of Artemartis, an influential art agency and collective he established in 2018 in Accra, Ghana. Transitioning from a background in mechanical engineering, Gomado left a conventional career path to pursue his passion for contemporary art, starting with a simple online art shop that evolved into a dynamic platform supporting emerging and mid-career Ghanaian visual artists.

Under his leadership, Artemartis has grown into a respected force in the global contemporary African art scene, representing five talented artists—Kwaku Yaro, Awanle Ayiboro Hawa Ali, James Mishio, Abdur Rahman Muhammad, and Courage Hunke—while maintaining a physical studio space in Accra. Gomado’s strategic vision has driven extensive international collaborations, including high-profile partnerships with prestigious institutions such as Phillips Auction House and the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

Key achievements include curating and facilitating the 2022 “Birds Of A Feather” selling exhibition with Phillips Auction House in London, which showcased 18 works celebrating contemporary Ghanaian artistic production and tapped into growing demand for African art on the global market. Artemartis has also participated prominently in the 1-54 Art Fair in London (2024), presenting a group showcase of its artists and solidifying its presence at one of the world’s leading platforms for contemporary African art.

Gomado’s innovative approach extends to experimental practices, including working with soundscapes to enhance artistic experiences. One notable example is preparing a custom soundscape for Kwaku Yaro’s solo exhibition, “Son of Man, Can These Bones Live?,” his first London solo show at Gallery 1957. This immersive audio element highlights the artist’s mother’s personal story, narrated in their local dialect, Buli, adding layers of cultural depth and emotional resonance to the visual works.

Gomado’s impact has earned widespread media acclaim for elevating Ghana’s vibrant art ecosystem. He has been featured or quoted in major outlets, including The Guardian (highlighting his insights on Artemartis’ growth from local exhibitions to collaborations with Phillips and 1-54, alongside coverage of artist Awanle Ayiboro), GQ South Africa (profiling him as the leader of a ground-breaking collective shaping Ghana’s art scene), National Geographic, The New York Times, Artnet (discussing the rise of Ghanaian art agencies and dealers like Artemartis), and The Art Newspaper (noting key partnerships such as with Phillips). He has also appeared on prominent podcasts, including The Art Business Podcast by David Bellingham, where he discussed the agency’s mission and impact, and the Change Africa Podcast, where he shared his journey from engineering to art entrepreneurship, the evolution of Artemartis, and strategies for bridging Ghanaian artists with global markets.

Through dedicated artist management, representation, bold strategic partnerships, and creative experimentation, Selasie Gomado continues to champion Ghanaian contemporary voices on the international stage, fostering cultural exchange and positioning Accra as a rising hub in the global art world.
